I’m Sally Hernandez Alfred, the clinician behind Healthysex.info
Welcome to my site and join me in my quest for sexpertise!
I LOVE learning and hope you will too! I have bachelor’s degrees in Biology, Liberal Arts, and Nursing. I also have a master’s degree in Nursing, with a board certification in Family Practice. I am currently pursuing my PhD in Human Sexuality, with a focus on Sex Education. I am passionate about sharing this knowledge with anyone interested in expanding their sexual health understanding. Life is always better when we can make informed decisions, and I believe that learning never ends.
As an educator, I utilize a more contemporary approach in my teaching. I believe that empowering my students with the skills to optimize their learning and become subject matter experts, is the key to success. I educate based on the humanistic teaching philosophy. This philosophy recognizes the natural curiosity and internal motivation of learners, and facilitates collaboration and creativity while developing one’s intuition. This is done by providing resources and evidence-based data that will support you on your learning journey. With this information, you will develop the skills to be able to determine what you need to know to improve your sexual health understanding, vocabulary, and application that works best for your specific clinical practice. I love working with healthcare professionals because you are already passionate about your patients and the human body. However, human sexuality is distinctly subjective and at times can feel like an uncomfortable subject. Getting a better understanding of this nuance will help you to care for your patients in a compassionate, holistic, and informed manner that will in turn positively impact the overall quality of your care and your patient’s daily lives.
Through my teaching and curriculum, you will also engage in a process of social reconstructionism. This philosophy stresses the importance of assessing the social inequities that your patients face, and engaging with learning that rewrites traditional practices allowing you to provide more inclusive care. I feel strongly about the importance of civil rights, human equality, and liberation, and incorporate these values into my curriculum. Even though our learning needs are all unique, when we are dealing with a topic as sensitive and important as human sexuality, we must operate from a place of equity and dignity. We have to identify the “why” in our recommendations. We must know where our medical resources and guidelines originate from, and be able to recognize the potential implicit bias or motivations behind the sources of information we are using. As healthcare providers, we cannot simply tell our patients what to do. We must learn how to engage them in addressing their specific sexual health needs. We must also recognize how social determinants of health, such as access to healthcare and social supports, safe housing, clean water, food, and language and literacy skills can impact their daily decision-making. Through this sexual health education, you will grow your confidence in addressing the systemic barriers that prevent your patients from achieving their health goals. Whatever your orientation, identity, or practices include: we deserve to have our questions answered in a thoughtful and compassionate way. Whether your patient is 16 or 60, we will work together to discover how you can deliver culturally informed sexual health information and evaluations in your clinical care that are relatable and stigma-free.
I’m so excited to create a resource that both providers and patients can use to find out the Healthy Sex Info you want or need to know!
